Should money be spent on space exploration?

Before 1950’s, human’s mobility was limited within the earth. It seemed like impossible to travel across the thick layer of air around us. However, this old thinking was broken by a technological wonder. In this world, there’s a machine which is in cylindrical shape and used to be a myth to every mankind. It works with thousands of horsepower and enables us to travel across the atmosphere to a place which is still an unknown to all of us. It’s called rocket engine.

In 1957, the Soviets, which was the leading country in the space industry successfully launched the first ever satellite named Sputnik 1. Its first spark symbolized the beginning of the space exploration era and was then triggered a series of chain reaction that brought the space exploration to its climax. The United State, the biggest rival of the Soviet, was then rising up and sent human being to the moon. It seems like everything goes smoothly, but another problem has arise. People started to question whether money should be spent in space exploration. And my answer is, YES!

Space exploration is not like we're throwing that money into the Sun. It produces thousands of jobs in our economy. The power of a country is actually determined by its citizens, which act like a root. Without a strong base from the citizens, how can a country survive in such a competitive world? And it's all being spent right here, stimulating our economy and funding scientists, engineers, teachers, students, computer scientists, contractors, technicians, skilled laborers, and many more. Hence it reduces the rate of jobless in our country.

Space exploration should continue because it could help solve many problems on Earth, such as overpopulation and lack of resources. Exploration of the final frontier must continue in order for human life to continue. The world population in 1970 was approximately 4 billion people, and is currently nearly 6 billion people. The world population in 2015 is estimated to be 7 billion people. According to the recent research, Mars has the most similarity with our earth compare to the other planets. If Earth ever becomes too overpopulated or over polluted, then perhaps people can move to Mars. This is also the result from the space exploration that we were questioning all the time.

In this universe, we are surrounded by many celestial objects that maybe potential threats to the earth. The Asteroid Belt, which is only 70 million kilometers away from us has a high density of asteroids. The shooting star that is often considered as a symbol of romance is actually the results of intruded and unfriendly asteroids. The Shoemaker-Levy-9-Jupiter Incident in 1994 had proven that collision between celestial objects maybe happen all the time. Therefore, we’ll never know when our earth will be blown up by the asteroid. Fortunately, the advancing in space technology enables us to prevent this potential incident. And I’m sure that all of us don’t want the earth to follow the footsteps of our moon as a dead planet.

Since the discovery of the Big Bang in 1920’s until today, there’s still no scientist and astronomer that can give an exact answer on the size of our universe. Some say that it’s infinity, with a mathematical number which is too large to be counted. So, another problem has arises again. Are you sure that we are the only intelligent creatures in such a large universe? In my opinion, there are many intelligent creatures in the outer space or maybe in the other galaxies. We are actually not alone in this universe. This can be proven by the witnesses of the intruder, and we called them as the aliens. Therefore, we are not only competing among ourselves, but also with the aliens. Someday, we maybe invaded by them and the scene in “Star Wars” will become a reality. Although there’s still no strong evidence to prove their existence, but still, prevention is better than cure. We should always prepare for war during the peace. And if it really does happened, we have to war for peace.

In conclusion, never ever think that space exploration is a waste of money. The knowledge about the space exploration and astronomy might be still new to us, but please don’t take it for granted. The things I mentioned just now might be a reality, we’ll never know.
